The story behind ‘Backstage’, a Hoboken lounge bar with musical roots

“Meet Me Backstage” is something we always wanted to tell someone and a neon yellow sign that lights up the 11th Street entrance to an elegant lounge bar in downtown Hoboken. Backstage, located at the back of the upscale, coast-themed Sirenetta Seafood + Raw Bar restaurant, serve up major speakeasy vibes due to the mystery behind this dimly-lit space. Gabi Lombardi, owner of Sirenetta, Sorellina Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar and Backstage, gave The Hoboken Girl exclusivity on what to expect from the contemporary place. Read on below to learn more about the concept, menu, and how Gabi pays homage to Maxwell’s, which once hosted concerts where Backstage is now located.

The concept

The space behind Sirenetta was created to be a neighborhood stopover for romantic drinks, a nightcap with friends or a unique place to celebrate a special occasion with an intimate atmosphere.

Gabi tells us, “In designing and conceptualizing the space, I wanted to recognize the famous Maxwell that he was, but also give him a new feel like we did up front with Sirenetta. It was important for me to have each bar with its own identity, including Sorellina, Sirenetta, and In the wings. So while Sirenetta is more of a bright, open contemporary space, Backstage has a more daring vibe with concrete floors, unfinished brick walls, plush velor seating, and a black marble bar.

To pay homage to the many iconic bands that performed there, Backstage kept the stage and enlarged it for lounge seating. “On the back wall, the team created a custom wallpaper using photos of the groups that were left behind, including Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer, Goo Goo Dolls and others,” Gabi said.

The Menu + Private Events

The drink menu includes seasonal cocktails, an extensive list of premium spirits, as well as fine Italian wines and champagnes. The cocktails are all named after songs from bands that have performed on stage over the years. You can also enjoy seafood from Sirenetta’s raw bar menu and homemade desserts. The selection includes a variety of oysters, clams and more.

Backstage can also be hired for private events, including cocktails with a private bar, lounge seating, and high tables. Event menus can include an open bar, past appetizers, and raw bar, antipasti, pasta or dessert stations. The space can accommodate up to 40 people for private events.

Gabi, who is also a certified sommelier, is delighted to share that starting in January, Backstage will also be hosting a variety of events, including cocktail-making classes, wine pairings, and wine and spirits tastings.
