Koufonisia’s emerald dream

Koufonisia’s emerald dream

I “met” Koufonisia for the first time at the age of 7; for the next 3 years, we continued to visit this small Cycladic island, which through my eyes of an innocent child was a huge paradise. Even then, I clearly remember an unexplored dream island with expansive golden beaches, turquoise waters, small natural pools and an authentic, festive island breeze.

Koufonisia’s emerald dream

I remember this intense feeling of absolute freedom!

The only thing that mattered to me was staying all day on the beach, building castles in the sand, and diving rocks into the sea. But it was a reasonable feeling. I was a carefree child. 20 years later I visited the island again – and my experience was not much different.

In July of last year, I was on the boat to Koufonisia. A ticket reservation made long before the referendum, capital controls and the gray clouds of uncertainty that obscured the uniquely Greek blue sky. Fortunately, at the very last minute, I didn’t cancel the trip, a decision that resonated in my ears more like a cry of self-preservation. There is no doubt that it was a ‘absolutely wise ‘ decision.

Cyclades Island

As soon as I set foot on this Cycladic island, God of Zen welcomed me in the middle of the Aegean Sea! A few hours under the influence of the island’s anxiolytic magical aura were enough to empty my mind and heart of all pain, anxiety, fear and insecurity – and let them dive deep into these fabulous crystal clear waters.

Koufonisia (meaning hollow islands)

Koufonisia (meaning Hollow Islands) comprises three main islands, Pano (upper) Koufonisi, Kato (lower) Koufonisi and Keros (the last two uninhabited). They took their name from the huge existing caves, which gave the impression of hollow islands to the pirates who stared at them from afar! I am desperately in love with Pano Koufonisi and I could certainly explain why …

Greece Cyclades

♦ The beaches with emerald waters are idyllic

Take the path (on foot or by bike) from the port to the east side and you will also experience this feeling of true happiness (blue)! In just three and a half kilometers, unique spots will be revealed to you; fine sandy beaches with clear waters in Foinikas, Fanos with the only beach bar on the island, the popular (also for nudism) Italida and certainly Pori. There are also the impressive sea caves which embrace the dreamy waters. Do not miss the small Gala (milk) beach and the Piscina natural swimming pool where the rocks give their natural recital.

The food is so tasty

Try “Melissa” for the well-known cooked dishes, the delicacies of the restaurant “Atairiastoi” and “Aneplora”, the fresh fish of Captain Michalis Kovaios, and try any dish your appetite desires after swimming at the Foinikas tavern for a while. as the sun goes down.

The chora is beautiful

This cute little chora, typical of blue and white, with its whitewashed streets, is ideal for photography enthusiasts. In its famous Rakadika in Koufochorio, you can taste “raki” (Cheers!) And become a business with the whole island.

♦ But I love above all his aura and his people

You will feel absolutely overwhelmed by the relaxing aura of the island where you don’t even need a car, but also by its original local protagonists! Dimitris Mavros, the heart of Foinikas, with its historic festivals, where Greeks and tourists drink and dance until morning, alongside dishes that are broken for fun and bonfires that light up the ground! Georgoula, the wife of Captain Michalis Koveos, with her magical voice that sings local songs, in their tavern while cooking. Rammike, the free spirit of Koufonisia, with his canoe and his captain the Minion in front of him. Manos Mavros with his light blue van and his big smile, the manager of the most chill out hotel on the island, the Hotel Paradise Resort. Koufonisia makes you want to stay there forever and make belts for the rest of her life!
