Curtains open on Ray Garcia’s Asterid restaurant at the Walt Disney Concert Hall

Chef Ray Garcia returns downtown tonight, and this time to the ground floor of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Asteride is a stunning new addition with a modern gourmet menu featuring American dishes on the ground floor of one of Los Angeles’ most iconic landmarks.

To be clear, Garcia’s new Downtown restaurant is not another Broken Spanish. Garcia’s career took a more personal and influential turn with BS Taqueria and Broken Spanish, which changed the culinary landscape of Los Angeles before they closed in 2019 and 2020, respectively. At Asterid – in the former Patina space – Garcia won’t rely on old dishes but instead focus on big flavors, with no tortillas on the menu.

Note the New England octopus roll with Aleppo yogurt and pickled cabbage salad. Or the cashew muhammara with ancho peppers, pomegranate, feta, and homemade flatbread. Garcia developed a dark red carnaroli risotto with beets, crème fraiche and dill, with a wonderful lemon tart with whipped cream for dessert. At first glance, these dishes may seem a little unexpected for Angeleno, but Garcia thinks Asterid connects with the diverse flavors and foods of Los Angeles.

Asterid has an evolving seasonal menu, so expect changes throughout the year. Garcia also brought in a broken Spanish veteran to lead the bar program. Chris Chernock expanded the wine list, cocktails and mocktails with mixes as bold as Garcia’s, with options like the Mezcal and Rice Cocktail with Kumquat Vermouth, Cocoa, Grilled Rice and Legendario Domingo Mezcal.

The opening of Asterid is one of several restaurants soon to be opened by notable chefs that will eventually transform this part of Grand Avenue. Garcia’s restaurant will reside directly across from the Frank Gehry-designed Grand LA complex, where chef José Andrés will open three restaurants later this year. Those planning a visit to the Music Center, Disney Hall, Broad Museum, or MOCA can book a meal or cocktail at Asterid and take a short ride to their destination.

Belzberg Architects made good use of the outdoor space, showcasing the Los Angeles skyline while creating a sleek, modern feel inside. Asterid is open for Sunday dinner, Tuesday-Thursday 5:30-10pm and Friday-Saturday until 11pm, but will likely change in the coming months (closed Mondays). Make your reservations via Resy.
