CEBU CITY, Philippines — What was supposed to be a night of fun and drinking turned bloody after one of the patrons of a resto-bar at Barangay Poblacion in Toledo City began shooting at another patron.
The incident resulted in the death of 26-year-old Rexford Laquinon. Two other patrons, identified as Marbel Bayutas, 31, and Brando Ortega, 24, were also injured after being hit by stray bullets.
As of this writing, Toledo City Police continue to search for the suspect who has been identified as a certain “Opaw” who is in his 30s.
In his report, Police Lt. Col. Dennis de Guzman said the shooting happened at Secretora Resto Bar in Barangay Poblacion around 1:20 a.m. on Sunday, January 30, 2022.
Citing the outcome of their initial investigation, de Guzman said Laquinon, a native of Barangay Bato in Toledo, had an argument with the suspect. Both were already drunk at that time.
Their argument culminated in a fight. The people at the resto bar appeased the two.
De Guzman said Opaw had left the resto-bar and was already carrying a handgun when he returned minutes later.
Opaw allegedly shot Laquinon, hitting him in the left cheek, neck and nape of the neck. Laquinon was already dead when he was brought to the hospital in the city of Toledo.
Bayutas was hit by a stray bullet to her chest while Ortega was shot in the right hand. Both were also taken to Toledo City Hospital, but Bayutas was later transferred to a Cebu City Hospital.
Responding officers recovered four spent cartridges of an as yet unknown caliber from the crime scene. /dcb
